Linerless Composite Pressure Vessel Qualified for Flight

Kiboko is the first linerless composite pressure vessel to be qualified for
spaceflight. CTD's Kiboko tank has been qualified as a key component for the
thruster system on the Air Force's FASTRAC nano-satellite. In June of 2006, a
fully integrated satellite was delivered to the Air Force Research Lab for
final launch integration.
Low Cost Launch Solution Largest Linerless LOX Tank Yet
Final qualification tests were successfully completed on a 42-inch diameter, all-composite
cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) tank. After a series of pressure and temperature cycles,
the tank demonstrated a safety factor of nearly 4 times its operating pressure of 550 psi
at liquid nitrogen temperature.
According to Maj. Gen. (ret.) Jack Kulpa, President of the Scorpius Space Launch
Company, "This advance has come about (in part) due to...new materials technology from
CTD. We are grateful... for their pioneering work that is also scalable to much larger
tanks and launch vehicles."
